I am a CEO and former long-time CFO. And yes, absolutely, with chatgpt I am doing almost all of our contracts and most of our litigation without our lawyers. Including advice on tactics. Most notably: they had a monopoly on templates, not on knowledge. It’s saved me 2-3% of my total operating budget this year. I can’t imagine that’s not going to shrink the field for new lawyers.

In reply to MC1PQE. I think this article is more about the future of AI, not what AI currently is. Yes, AI has a lot of flaws now. However, many of them will be minimised in the future. It’s developing rapidly.

This article seems to be focusing on intelligent, AI-based robots. Some of the people I used to come up against in the insurance sector could be replaced by a Roomba.

In reply to MC1PQE. ChatGPT is trained on publicly available Internet data until about 2021. The same technology used on a proprietary legal database (think WestLaw or Lexis) would likely not cause the same problems.

AI could eventually do these things, but if they’re used to train junior solicitors then they have a value beyond the service provided to the client.

It’s a bit strange how the author did not highlight the risks of relying on robots/AI, especially given the recent reporting of ChatGPT flaws related to making up cases and using these as references/citations. This piece could have been strengthened if the author explored the risks as well, and not only the potential benefits.

Considering ChatGPT just provided false case parties, citations, facts and judgements in an affidavit in the US, I think we’re alright for a bit.
